How it works

The page is rebuilt from the live feed when someone visits, at most once every 5 minutes. It covers Britain's 40 busiest stations, ranked by passenger numbers in the ORR station usage estimates for April 2024 to March 2025. It reads the next 12 departures at each. It counts cancelled trains, those 5 or more minutes late, and those marked Delayed. Data is from Darwin, the same feed as station screens.

Counts are departures. A train calling at 2 of these stations counts at both. For other stations, use the A to Z of live departure boards. For network-wide updates and planned engineering works, see National Rail's disruptions page.

Train disruption FAQs

How often does the page update?

The page rebuilds at most every 5 minutes. Each station's own live departure board refreshes every 30 seconds while it is open.

What counts as a delayed train?

A departure counts as delayed on this page when its expected time is 5 or more minutes after the scheduled time, or Darwin marks it Delayed with no new time. Smaller slips are left out.

Where does the data come from?

The data comes from Darwin, the rail industry's real-time train running system. It is provided through the Rail Data Marketplace under an open licence. The notices are written by the National Rail Communication Centre, arrive with each station's board and appear word for word.

What should I do if my train is cancelled?

Open the live board for your station to find the next train to your destination. If a cancellation or delay means you decide not to travel, you may be entitled to a full refund from whoever sold you the ticket. If you travel and arrive late, you can usually claim compensation through Delay Repay.Source: National Rail: compensation and refunds

Does this page cover every station?

No. It covers Britain's 40 busiest stations. A problem on a quieter line may not appear here. Use the A to Z of live departure boards for every other station.Source: ORR station usage estimates
